Donald Trump’s Ignorance of the Constitution

Retired basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote for The Washington Post this week Donald Trump wants to take out the Constitution.

I don’t think that’s true.

I believe Trump, like many Americans, is Constitution ignorant.

During a meeting with members of Congress in July the billionaire candidate said he would defend the Constitution, including Article XII.

Problem is, there isn’t an Article XII.

There are but seven articles to the Constitution.

Maybe he was talking about amendments? There are 27.

“No one will ever mistake Donald Trump for a student of James Madison,” writes James Lowry. “The real-estate mogul has demonstrated about as much familiarity with the U.S. Constitution as he has with the Bible, which is to say, none.”

This is not really alarming, however.

In 2011 Newsweek gave 1,000 Americans the U.S. Citizenship test—and most of them failed miserably.

“An alarming number of Americans did not know basic information about the Constitution, namely that it was the supreme law of the land, that it was set up at the Constitutional Convention and that the first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights,” writes Rachel Quigley.
